Mindful Living
An Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be purposefully present where we are, focus on what we are doing, and recognize what we are feeling. This simple “superpower” as many have called it, enhances curiosity, concentration, and perspective-taking – all valuable skills when connecting with ourselves, each other, and the world.
Mindfulness and the gratitude it enhances won’t make challenges disappear, nor do they demand we force a smile through pain. Instead, together they function as an internal compass, guiding us to hold both struggles and joys in the same moment. By looking beyond our evolutionary blind spots, we see that life’s ordinary, neutral spaces can be sanctuaries of appreciation.
By engaging in mindfulness, we move from searching for happiness to hosting it. We create a mental environment where true moment-to-moment contentment can actually take root and grow. Ultimately, the most important work we can do is to cultivate a mind that knows how to be happy, right here, right now, in the midst of it all.
Mindfulness is like turning on a light in an attic. The light shows the treasures, the old junk we thought we’d gotten rid of, the dusty corners that need clearing out. A few minutes of meditation each day is enough to illuminate what’s there and to gently and intentionally choose what you carry forward and what to let go. That small act can be the beginning of meaningful, lasting change.
Creative endeavors stimulate the brain, connect us to others, foster a sense of joy in our lives, and are also a pathway for functionality and longevity. With the patience and self-awareness that mindfulness cultivates, you can thrive outside the box of stagnant thinking.
Karla Jensen, PhD, explores the benefits of practicing mindfulness in small, daily moments to enhance well-being and resilience. Drawing on research and practical examples, she shares simple ways to bring awareness to activities like sipping coffee, washing dishes, and observing nature. Mindfulness, she explains, can reduce stress, improve focus, and strengthen our connection to ourselves and others.
In this precious life, we will all lose someone or something dear to our hearts. Learn how mindfulness can also aid in mitigating grief.
While smartphones offer countless benefits and are a necessary part of our daily lives, they can also lead to stress, disrupt sleep, and most alarmingly, physically and mentally block the person right in front of us.
