Investing in Handbags, History, and Confidence
A CONVERSATION WITH CASSIE SMIDT
Tucked away in the south end of Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket District on O Street, Status Haymarket isn’t your average boutique. Inside the shop you’re instantly greeted by some of fashion’s most iconic names—Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton—and the boutique’s bold and magnetic owner, Cassie Smidt.
Cassie, 54, opened Status in August 2024 with one clear intention: to bring the elegance, quality, and heritage of pre-loved luxury handbags to Lincoln. “Luxury is not about showing off—it’s about investing wisely in things that last,” Cassie says.
“These handbags are works of art, rooted in history and craftsmanship. They’ve been loved, carried, and cared for. Now they’re ready for the next chapter. That’s what excites me.”
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE BAGS
A luxury handbag comes with its own story. Some were carried to career-changing interviews or milestone celebrations; others were designed by fashion legends like Karl Lagerfeld during his years with Chanel. “I’ve got a story for every bag in this store,” Cassie says. “I want people to know they are making an investment in themselves and in history when they own one of these handbags,” she adds. “It’s not just a bag. It’s a piece of fashion history, sometimes even art.”
Cassie believes in sustainable luxury, choosing items that retain their value and legacy. “I’ve never purchased a brand-new designer handbag,” she says. “Why would I? The second it leaves the boutique, it depreciates—just like a new car. A pre-loved luxury bag holds its value. It’s a smart investment.”
But handbags aren’t the only way Cassie helps women feel confident. The merchandise at Status is as intentional as its mission. You’ll find limited quantities of carefully curated, trend-forward pieces—not more than eight of any one style—so every outfit feels unique. She also offers men's accessories and unisex pieces, in a warm, inclusive space where everyone and all ages are welcome. She loves that her clothing items are both trendy and affordable.
BUILDING CONFIDENCE
As a two-time breast cancer survivor, Cassie brings perspective and purpose to everything she does. “I refuse to hide because of a few scars,” she says. “And I don’t want other women to hide either. I’m here to help them feel confident and to see themselves the way I see them.”
Her hands-on, no-pressure approach to styling is what sets Status apart. “I’ll spend two hours helping someone find the perfect piece, and if they don’t buy anything, that’s okay,” she says. “It’s about building trust and confidence, not making a sale.”
Cassie’s mission even extends beyond fashion. She partners with Barnabas Community, a local nonprofit that supports those in need. She helps them sell donated luxury items, with 100% of the proceeds going back to Barnabas. “This is what full-circle sustainability looks like,” she notes, “and I’m happy that Status Haymarket can play a role as a resource to help them continue their mission in Lincoln."
At Status Haymarket, the bags may be the stars—but it’s the confidence Cassie helps women reclaim that truly steals the show. Stop by and discover the story waiting for you.
