Am I Going To Be Okay?

By Nicole Norris

This is a question we hear often, especially from new clients in their 50s or 60s. They have spent years diligently saving for retirement, following the “recommended amounts,” but still aren’t sure if their investments are aligned with their goals or if they have enough to retire comfortably. The fear of uncertainty may even lead some to avoid asking the question at all.

The truth is everyone’s retirement looks different. What works for one person may not suit another. Some dream of traveling the world, others lean into generosity, and still more need to plan intentionally for medical care due to health concerns. For these individuals, their cost of living in retirement could be higher. On the other hand, some envision a quieter retirement, debt-free and close to home, or they plan to continue working in a lower-stress role. These retirees will likely need a very different financial plan.

It can be tempting to pick an arbitrary retirement savings goal—say, $1,000,000—based on a neighbor’s advice or what you hear in the media. But this one-size-fits-all approach will not work for everyone. Imagine instead, meeting with a financial advisor now, before retirement is just around the corner. A thorough review of your financial picture, along with expert guidance, can help you understand your unique needs and whether your current path will get you where you want to be.

As a financial advisor, one of my greatest joys is reassuring clients that they are on track to be okay. Sometimes, it’s primarily because of the diligent savings and effort they have already put in. My role here is to make sure they understand what is working well currently and, if necessary, recommend adjustments that could optimize their strategy. Other times, there may be more work to do. Together, we can jointly craft a thoughtful, tailored plan to get them on track. No matter the situation, a little guidance can offer a sense of security and clarity.

Many people wait until they are ready to leave their employer to consider working with an advisor. But why wait until then? Starting early and having a clear plan in place can make all the difference in ensuring you have the retirement you’ve always dreamed of.
